school poetry competition

These days we are getting prepared for the school poetry competition. Deadline 2nd May 2016. Circolare_n._261__concorso_poesia_15_16-5

Personally, as a teacher, I am deeply exited about it! I believe there is a good valuable potential in my classes, and I am also sure that the next weeks’ lessons will be of great help to improve my students’ English vocabulary, besides expressing their feelings in English.

At the end of our lessons, we are going to create an eBook gathering in all my students’ worthy poems (with their permission). Stay tuned for the publishing of this coming soon  “limited edition”  😉

Some questions for you all (my students, bloggers and readers):

1 – WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE POEM? IF YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE POEM… Publish it here below!

2 – DO YOU LIKE POETRY?

3 – DO YOU THINK POETRY IS IMPORTANT OR NOT FOR THE HUMANKIND? WHAT DO YOU THINK A  PERSON  CAN DO WITH POETRY?

4 – HOW CAN POETRY BE USEFUL TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE?

Here you can find one of my personal most beloved poems (translated into Italian):

Mosca (1959)

  3. Unfurtunately I DON’T have a favorite poem, but I like the ‘Divina Commedia’ WRITTEN by Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet. I think that poetry can help some people to come out from a difficult part of their life!
MOREOVER IT can be accompanied BY music.
All in all Poetry can BE usefull EVEN for learnING foreign languages, but MAYBE only if you like it.

  4. I haven’t got a favourite poem and I don’t like poetry because I think it is boring because for me the poetry DOESN’T express ANYthing. AT school we study poetry Italian and English.
Poetry is important to known what people think AND FEEL.
I don’t like poetry, I prefer a short story in a book or in THE internet. Now the poetry is decaying because internet is taking over. And now people prefer a youtube video rather a poetry.
In the past people likeD Dante Alighieri BECAUSE with poetry HE transmitTED their thoughts. And EVERYBODY read his poetry and understand what the author thought.
Furthermore I THINK poetry can be useful to learn foreign languages because IT can open your mind or it can change your mindset.

  5. I personally don’t like poetry, because I think it’s boring. There are some poems I like though, but they are maybe very rude. I like some texts by Charles Bukowski because he writes in a very realistic way. In my opinion poetry and prose are the same thing because both of them are written texts. Let’s make clear one thing: I said I don’t like poetry but i didn’t say that it’s not important to read it. In my view poetry is a good way to learn a foreign language; by creating a personal poem you have more chances to learn new words

  7. My favourite poem IS ”Mattina” BY Giuseppe Ungaretti because IT IS very short and very simple.

    Mattina (Giuseppe Ungaretti)
    M’illumino
    d’immenso.

HOWEVER I don’t love poetry, but I like it. I think the poetry is important for everyone because with a poem you can express feelings and emotions. I think a poem is a song without music.
BUT PERSONALLY I don’t think the poetry is useful to learn a new language because a poet writes with a different method than how you usually talk.

Furthermore poetry can be useful to learn foreign LANGUAGES because it gives you many words, can open your mind or it can change your mindset.

Poetry in a different language can be important because usually the author uses the TRUE language of a country, and not the language you can find on a schoolbook.

I think it it’s not important for the humankind, but for someone i think it can be able to be a strument to express the personal feeling. I think one person with a poeM can BUILT it as YOU want. I think poetry can be useful to learn a different language because IN POEMS THERE ARE use a lot of words.

  13. Honestly I hate poetry, and I have no favourite poems and do not like to read them, simply because they are boring and do not say ANYThing to me. Then I think that MAYBE not all but a few poems, DON’t HAVE a deep meaning, perhaps the poet just wanted to say that there were birds on the windows! I think poetry is not for humankind, for evolution or something in the future, and I think that a person can not express feelings in a poem, because I do not say anything, ESPECIALLY TO PEOPLE I do not know.
FOR ME It is not very useful to learn a foreign language, because a poem is complicated to understand EVEN in Italian, let alone in English or French!

Poetry is important, because the world without poetry is a flat world.
Today with a poem A PERSON can tell a history.
Learning a poem in another language helps you to learn that language.

However, I THINK a person who LIKES poems can involve several people changing theIR ife. MOREOVER poetry can be helpful to learn many languages because they use a “vulgar” language that no one writES in schoolbooks.
